Cape Town - Many graduates and school-leavers bemoan the fact that they have a qualification; they are armed with enormous enthusiasm, but unable to get a job – or even an interview! It is a very frustrating situation, one that needs to be addressed with creativity and great determination.

Excellence comes from the experience of doing things correctly, experience from doing things wrong. Don’t be too hard on yourself – just try not to make the same mistake twice.

If you are on your career starting blocks, consider trying a job shadow. If you are accomplished and can offer some inspiration, try to make yourself available to those who wish to watch the work you do.

Here are a few tips for job shadowing:

* If you are wanting to shadow, make the call of request personally, do not ask your parent to phone for you.

* Do not waste the opportunity – view a vocation that is really something of interest.

* Research the company.

* Outline what you wish to learn and to be exposed to.

* If you are accepted, follow up and confirm in writing.

* Check dress, timing and preparation required.

* Do not expect to do, rather expect to see.

* Make an impression, try to ask interesting and intelligent questions.

* Do not be too shy.

* Offer to do menial tasks.

* Write to say thanks for the experience.

* Ask for a letter of reference.

The value of having work experience is immeasurable. As an aspirant, ambitious career person on the starting blocks, have you ever considered the intangible cost to an employer of a having a new recruit in the workplace? How could you arrive in employment with experience as part of your brand?

Volunteer or offer your services free of charge. Think of it as an investment in your future. Look at the exercise as a two-way street – if you are able to learn on the job, you will have gained experience.

While you have no guarantee of future employment, having your help is of no cost to the employer, and the value of the learning opportunity is irreplaceable to you.
