Pretoria - South Africa's unemployment rate was little changed at 25.4 percent of the labour force in the third quarter of 2014 from 25.5 percent in Q2, data showed on Thursday.

In its quarterly labour force survey, which polls households, Statistics South Africa said this amounted to 5.151 million people without work, down slightly from 5.154 million in the previous three months.

It said the construction and mining sectors had added 135,000 and 19,000 jobs respectively in Q3 compared to the same period in 2013, but manufacturing shed 38,000 while agriculture lost 54,000 jobs.

The expanded definition of unemployment, which includes people who have stopped looking for work, was at 35.8 percent in the third quarter from 35.6 percent in Q2. - Reuters
