Johannesburg - The Energy Department has announced that the price of petrol will be hiked by 49c/litre in Gauteng from Wednesday.

The pricing schedule for the different fuel zones, including KwaZulu-Natal, will be announced on Tuesday.

Also set to be hiked this week is diesel, by between 46c and 49c/litre, paraffin by between 42 and 56c/litre, and liquefied petroleum gas by R1/kg.

The department attributed the hike to high crude oil prices which resulted in higher prices of all petroleum products in international markets this month, compared to April.

Listed as a factor was the rand’s strengthening against the US dollar.

“The international price of Brent crude oil increased on average during the period under review compared to the previous one. The US crude stockpiles fell for a second straight week, suggesting the world’s biggest oil market is rebalancing. Furthermore, (there are) renewed tensions in the Middle East (Iraq) which worries about the security of supply of crude oil,” the department said.
