Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) had closed an office of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and was treating the union unfairly, NUM said on Friday. The Anglo American unit had shut the office at the Union mine, which Amplats was planning to sell as part of a review of operations that would cut as many as 14 000 jobs, NUM said in a statement. “The aim is to weaken trade unions affiliated to Cosatu and the ruling party,” NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said. NUM is losing support to rivals, including the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu). On Thursday, Cosatu said Amplats, Lonmin and Impala Platinum were working to weaken the position of its NUM affiliate. Amplats stock slid 0.58 percent to R427.47 on Friday
