Johannesburg - The power grid will be severely constrained for the rest of the week, power utility Eskom said on Tuesday.

“It is possible that we may go through today [Tuesday] without implementing any load shedding,” spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said.

“If any of our generating units break down we might be forced to implement [load shedding].”

Phasiwe urged Eskom consumers to use less electricity.

“We are doing everything to bring back the generators that are out on maintenance services,” he said.

Eskom announced on Monday that unit six of its newly-built Medupi power station in Limpopo had produced power for the first time.

This was the first of the power station's six units to be synchronised.

South Africa would see the unit's full potential of 794MW being fed into the national grid within the next three months, Eskom said.
