Pretoria - A record number of South Africans submitted their income tax returns on day one of tax season, the country’s revenue service said on Thursday.

At the close of business on Wednesday, 171 568 tax returns had been submitted.

“This is even more significant and encouraging if one considers that the threshold for submitting an income tax return this year was increased to R350 000 from R250 000,” said SA Revenue Service (SARS) commissioner Tom Moyane said in a statement.

“This achievement on day one heralds a great start for tax season and sends out a very positive compliance message by taxpayers.”

Moyane said 14 000 SARS staff were on hand to help taxpayers with their returns.
