Rustenburg - The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has formally requested an extension to respond to the facilitator’s proposal on wages and salaries, the union said on Monday.
“We will be using the extension to conclude consulting our members and collecting feedback on the facilitator’s proposal. Talks of the union having rejected or accepted the facilitator’s proposal are therefore premature,” said Samwu spokesman Papikie Mohale.
He said Samwu would hold a central executive committee (CEC) meeting from August 5 to August 7.
“The CEC will, among other things, consolidate the union’s position on the facilitator’s proposal. We will therefore only be in a position to communicate the union position after the CEC.”
The initial deadline for Samwu to respond to the proposal was on July 24.
The facilitator has proposed amongst others, a minimum monthly salary of R6 014.93 and an increase of 7 percent, effective from July 1.
Samwu was demanding an across-the-board increase of 15 percent for all employees.
