Pretoria - A group of at least 500 people gathered at the Pretoria train station on Tuesday to march and demand the removal of minister of transport Dipuo Peters.
The marchers, organised by the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) sang revolutionary songs next to a Satawu branded lorry.
They were scheduled to march to the Union Buildings where they would hand over a memorandum, demanding the removal of Peters from office.
They sang songs that praised fired Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) CEO Lucky Montana.
“Montana ke CEO ya rona… ke CEO ya rona… [Montana is our CEO]” the group sang they were waving Satawu branded flags.
Montana, who is supported by Satawu and the MK Military Veterans, was fired by the Prasa board two weeks ago.
The board said his removal had nothing to do with the scandal over the purchasing of Spanish trains deemed not suitable for South Africa’s railway infrastructure.
Government spent R600 million rand on the locomotives.
Montana has since promised to reveal details around his removal and also indicated that government had intervened to resolve the impasse between him and board chairman Popo Molefe.
Prasa falls under Peters’ department.
