Pretoria - Coin collectors can get a special edition R2 coin commemorating the centenary of the Union Buildings.

South African Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus announced on Wednesday that the South African Mint has produced 3.5 million R2 coins for circulation.

A special commemorative R2 crown-sized silver coin will be for sale to collectors. Only 1 000 of these collector’s coins will be produced and each will cost between R600 and R700.

A set with 20 commemorative postal stamps and the two coins will cost a collector about R1 200 and the number will be limited to 700 sets.

The City of Tshwane celebrated the Union Buildings’ 100th anniversary earlier this week.

The coins have “100 years of the Union Buildings” written on them, beside an imprint of the buildings. The front of the coin shows the country’s coat of arms, the year of issue and the name of the country.

The coins will be introduced into circulation early next year.

Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said: “The Union Buildings must be turned into a symbol of reconciliation that all South Africans should be proud of… Only a few of our people have gone beyond the stairs on the lawns. Last week they came on a sad day.

“We have to look into whether it is not necessary to open the Union Buildings so people can come in and walk around.”

Mourners walked through the buildings to see Nelson Mandela lying in state for three days last week. On Monday, a nine-metre-high statue of Mandela was unveiled in the gardens by President Jacob Zuma.

Collectors may get the coins from SA Mint and Coin World. - Pretoria News
