Woolworths has opened its largest food market in Somerset West near Cape Town and plans to roll out more of these “Super Woolies” stores.

The new store is six times the size of the one it replaced and features an in-store sushi bar, fishmonger, butchery, restaurant and extended fresh food area, among others. Chief executive Ian Moir said one of the main missions of the new food stores was for customers to be able to complete their shopping basket in the stores, without going to any of its competitors. He said the experience of shopping was also greatly improved and Woolworths could provide competitive pricing along with a great experience. “Our brands are the same price as our competition. People thought Woolworths was too expensive, so we had to make sure we were good value,” Moir said. Woolworths recently closed its Nigeria business and bought back the remaining African franchise stores outside of South Africa.
