You will have to move quickly if you want to nominate people to serve on the Sectional Titles Schemes Management Advisory Council, because the deadline is Friday, July 17.

The Advisory Council will be established in terms of the Sectional Titles Schemes Management Act (STSMA), which was signed by President Jacob Zuma in June 2011 but has yet to take effect. The Act will replace sections of the Sectional Titles Act that stipulate how sectional title schemes must be administered once they have been established.

The responsibilities of the Advisory Council include:

* Making recommendations to the Minister of Human Settlements when the minister draws up regulations under the STSMA;

* Reviewing the implementation of the STSMA and the regulations issued in terms of the Act; and

* Making recommendations to the minister about amendments to the Act.

Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu called for nominations in a notice published in the Government Gazette of June 26.

The notice states that nominees should have expertise and “substantial experience” in the management of a range of types of sectional titles schemes, law, risk management and financial management.

You cannot nominate yourself, and there are a number of grounds on which a person can be disqualified from being appointed to the council.
