Whether you’re taking your first step on the corporate ladder or you run a large company, when it comes to offers of credit, everyone is a target, Barry O’Mahony, the founder of Veritas Wealth, says.

“We all need to look at breaking debt cycles and developing good savings habits,” he says.

As part of Financial Planning Week, Veritas Wealth and other financial planning practices – in conjunction with the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa – will host workshops in Cape Town on September 8 and 10.

* On Tuesday, September 8, Gavin van Dyk of Fiscal Private Clients and Paul Rossouw of Old Mutual will host workshops at the Allan Gray auditorium in the V&A Waterfront and the Durbanville Conference Centre respectively. The workshops, titled “Getting you on the right track”, will offer financial guidance to 20- to 35-year-olds.

“Your twenties are when you should be developing good financial and savings habits that will set you up for life,” O’Mahony says.

* On Thursday, September 10, Craig Torr of Crue Consulting will present a workshop at Claremont Hall aimed at domestic workers and gardeners. He will provide advice on dealing with debt and loan sharks, living within your income and developing good financial habits.

In Torr’s experience, people in the lower-income sector are easy prey for creditors. With modest incomes and no form of financial planning, it can prove extremely challenging for them to get ahead.

“The workshop for domestic workers and gardeners will also be of value to their employers, who can also greatly assist their employees in forming good financial habits. With this in mind, we urge employers to attend this workshop with their staff,” O’Mahony says.
