THE ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has paid tribute to Union of Muslim Students Association (MSA) president Yusuf Talia, who died yesterday.

Talia had Duchenne muscular dystrophy and was admitted to hospital after his condition deteriorated.

“We express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and members of the Union of Muslim Students Association for the tragic passing of their president, Comrade Yusuf Talia.

“Yusuf lived an inspirational life and despite being wheelchair-bound he obtained a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree and was in the final year of his second degree.

“In addition to being elected president of the Muslim Students Association, in 2009 he was elected into the position of vice-president of Wits SRC,” the ANCYL said yesterday.

News of Talia’s passing was posted on the MSA website, which said he was buried in Joburg yesterday.

“A great leader and colleague, Yusuf inspired and led MSA Union with sincerity, justice and excellence and his reach spread far beyond MSA Union, he was an all-round great leader,” the MSA said on its website.

“We pray that we can carry on the legacy that he has set for us. Yusuf has been an inspiration to many of us…

“We have learnt the value of collective leadership through the example Yusuf lived, and in his death, we believe that through collective leadership we should honour his life.”
