THE Cape Times Bursary Fund yesterday received a cheque for R140 000 to provide support for matriculants from disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape.

The welcome boost was presented by Christopher Trott, British Consul General and Dean of the Cape Town Consular Corps.

Les Williams, chairman of the Cape Times Bursary Fund, said the funds had been raised at the third annual Consular Ball in October.

The function was attended by ambassadors, consuls general and honorary consuls as well as their friends, business associates and local government representatives from more than 20 countries.

The fund pays bursary recipients next month, he said.

“We are delighted to accept this generous donation,” said Williams.

“We would also like to thank Isabel Verwey, organiser of the Consular Ball, for making this happen.”

There have been 507 graduates funded by the Cape Times Bursary Fund over 29 years.

Other beneficiaries of the event are the Durbanville Children’s Home and Proud Partners.

Anyone wishing to donate to the fund is invited to send an e-mail to Sandy Naude, trustee of the Cape Times Bursary Fund at [email protected]
