THE Cape Times and Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers are offering a R10 000 bursary to a pupil as part of the Mitchells Plain Festival.

Festival organiser Rozario Brown says the weekend event is not just about fun, but also about economic development and uplifting people.

The festival takes place at Westridge Gardens at the weekend.

Matric pupils are asked to write a 350-word essay on what or who inspired them to want to study at a tertiary institution. The winning essay will be published in the first week of January.

Cape Times editor Aneez Salie said: “Education is at the heart of transformation and we all need to contribute to transformation, not only at our places at work or at our homes but in society in general. So we’ve made this money available to kick-start a bursary and we are grateful to Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers for having made available the additional amount of money.

“We invite other businesses to follow their lead.”

Iqbal Dhansay, director of Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers, said the bursary was a way to give back to the community for continuously supporting the business.

He said the bursary could change the life of a pupil.

“Education is very important, taking the high level of unemployment into consideration. It is a way to better your circumstances,” he said.

The Mitchells Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust will assist in adjudicating the entries.

Trust spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said:

“We are working hard to ensure that matriculants who deserve to pursue tertiary studies are not denied the opportunity because they can’t afford to pay for it. We are confident the winner will succeed if he or she works hard toward a degree or diploma.

“They have to work hard for it and we also expect them to give back to our communities in Mitchells Plain.”

Entries can be e-mailed to [email protected] by December 9.
