Cape Town resident Mathieu Dasnois, 29, is recovering from lacerations to his hands and right foot after he was attacked by a great white shark at Sugarloaf Rock, near Port St Johns, the NSRI reported last night.

Dasnois, a former part-time Cape Times photographer, was with a group on a sightseeing trip organised by Rob Nettleton, the skipper of their boat, the NSRI said.

“Having recently purchased new dive equipment, Mathieu, an avid and well-known spear fisherman, had asked skipper Rob Nettleton if while out on the water, he could take a quick dip to test his equipment.”

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the shark first grabbed him by the hand and a second time had his foot in its mouth. Nettleton movedthe boat alongside Dasnois and the people on board pulled him to safety, said Lambinon.

“Emergency medical treatment began immediately and Mathieu was brought ashore. Paramedics treated his injuries and transported him to hospital, where following an operation, he is in high spirits.” – Staff Writer
