COSATU has called for the deployment of law enforcement officers – who will be trained at the earmarked police training facility based at the old GF Jooste Hospital site – into the Cape Flats.

This comes ahead of a press conference to be held today by Premier Helen Zille, mayor Patricia de Lille and representatives of the Manenberg Steering Committee about plans in the community.

On Sunday, Cosatu Western Cape leader Tony Ehrenreich held a press conference outside the Manenberg police station detailing concerns around the plans and the sale of the hospital.

He said the police college will be welcomed if it is constitutional and sees the personnel deployed to the Cape Flats.

He called for Jooste to be reopened until a new and better hospital is built there. “We cannot subject our people’s health needs to wild promises by an uncaring government.”

Mayoral spokesperson Pierrinne Leukes said officials would not comment until Monday’s press briefing.
