The Western Cape Liquor Authority has temporarily closed the Khayelitsha tavern where eight young women died following a stampede on a staircase, says MEC for Economic Opportunities Alan Winde.

Winde said liquor authority inspectors had visited Osi’s Place in Makhaza in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The Liquor Authority closed the establishment temporarily. Pending the outcome of a report from the SAPS’s designated liquor officer, the Liquor Authority will take appropriate action, which can include sanctions such as revoking the licence if warranted.”

Winde said the provincial government would follow up reports that some of the people in the tavern were underage.

“We are extremely concerned by this and will be investigating in terms of the liquor law.”

Six women died on the scene after falling when a step railing collapsed and another two were seriously injured in the collapse when the car rushing them to hospital collided with another vehicle.

According to police, the deceased were aged between 15 and 23. Police have opened a death inquest to probe if anyone could be held responsible for the collapse.

A culpable homicide case was also opened to investigate the car accident. – ANA
