Hundreds of people gathered outside the Durban City Hall where a memorial service for the slain Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was due to be held.

Scores of people wearing their Orlando Pirates shirts could be seen amid a heavy police presence.

The service was due to start at noon, but at 12.30pm organisers were still testing the loudspeaker system.

Meyiwa's body was also expected in Durban at noon and was due to be driven through the city centre later in the afternoon.

He hails from Umlazi, on the outskirts of the coastal city.

Meyiwa, who was also the captain of Soweto's Orlando Pirates, was shot dead in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, on Sunday night.
