JOHANNESBURG: A tracking feature, “Find My iPad”, has helped the police arrest a syndicate linked to the hijackings of luxury vehicles.

The syndicate was arrested after they robbed a house in Sandton on Saturday night. An Audi Quattro 5, a cellphone, an iPad and jewellery were among the items the gang made off with.

The robbers were unaware, however, that the owner had turned on the “Find My iPad” feature, which detected their location. The information was relayed to the police.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said the owner had been in the house at the time, but could not say how the gang had managed to gain entry to the property.

The gang was traced to Libya Street in Klipfontein Ext 3, according to the iPad’s location feedback

“The members went to a nearby tavern where they searched everyone. They received further information to check a house on the opposite side of the street,” Mogale said.

When the police moved closer to the house next to the tavern, she added, they stopped a white Hyundai Getz reversing in the driveway of the house.

When the police searched the three suspects in the car, they found a box full of jewellery. Several hijacked cars were also found on the property.
