ROGER Kebble’s family is still grappling with the reality that the 76-year-old took his own life and was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car in a quiet spot in Bishopscourt on Tuesday.
His son, former Springbok rugby player Guy, told the Cape Times yesterday that his family was trying to cope with the tragedy under difficult circumstances.
“It’s quite early to say that the reality has sunk in. There are things that we did, but will no longer do any more. I even miss the irritating calls I would sometimes get from him.”
Roger Kebble’s death came weeks before the 10th anniversary of his other son Brett’s “assisted suicide”.
Both father and son died in expensive luxury vehicles.
On September 27, 2005, mining magnate Brett Kebble’s killers shot at him six times on a deserted stretch of Melrose Street in Johannesburg in an “assisted suicide”.
An emotional Guy has described his father as the best person to have around.
“He cared about doing what’s right. He was very close to his family. We are not even close to making funeral arrangements.
“There are still a lot of things that need to be done. We hope we would have it by earliest next week.
“There are a lot of people who want to come. The earliest might be Thursday, even perhaps push it to Friday,” Guy said. A passer-by had alerted authorities to the grisly discovery.
The Kebble family has been in the spotlight since 2005, when Brett was killed in what was later determined to have been an assisted suicide.
He was shot while driving to a dinner engagement with a business associate.
Kebble was alive for a few moments, but after driving for 400m he lost control, swerved across the road and smashed into the railing of a bridge on the M1 in Johannesburg.
