BEAUFORT West detectives are investigating attempted murder after the ANC’s Central Karoo regional secretary Windy Plaatjies was shot in his shoulder at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said a 24-year-old man was arrested and is due to appear in court today.

It is suspected Plaatjies had tried to break up a fight between two men at the Cosy Corner tavern in Kwa-Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West, on Saturday morning when he was shot.

Pojie said preliminary investigations revealed that two men were fighting over a woman and Plaatjies had intervened.

“They went outside into the streets where they continued their brawl.

“The victim then tried to intervene and got the two men separated when a shot was discharged from a firearm.

“The victim was hit from behind in his right shoulder. He is currently in hospital to receive medical care,” Pojie said.

A 24-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards.

“Beaufort West detectives are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident at Cosy Corner in Kwa-Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West, (Saturday) morning,” Pojie said.

Provincial ANC secretary Faiez Jacobs said Plaatjies was transported from Beaufort West to a hospital in George.

According to him, Plaatjies was in a critical but stable condition. “The ANC is shocked by the news and is calling on all members to support (Plaatjies’s) family.”
