SPORT and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has sent his condolences to the family of Vuyani Qunta, who worked in international relations in the department for several years.

Qunta died in a military hospital last week.

Mbalula visited Qunta’s family at their home in Langa, where he also attended a prayer service, yesterday afternoon.

“He was outstanding when it comes to transformation and the history of rugby and sports in this country. Mr Qunta was one of the people who captured the history of what happened in relation to sport at the time of isolation,” Mbalula said.

He was a “great patriot”.

“He worked as a civil servant up until his retirement. We are here to pass our condolences to his family and to remind South Africa of people like him. Our struggle is memory against forgetting.”

Mbalula said the efforts made by Qunta to promote transformation in rugby and other sporting codes should be continued.

Not telling Qunta’s story would be a great embarrassment to this generation and to future ones, he said.

His funeral will take place this weekend. – Staff Writer
