THE Castle of Good Hope hosted the annual Cape Town Military Tattoo which showcased military bands and intricate drill manoeuvres, and culminated with a big blast.

The bang, from a cannon, was provided by the Cape Field Artillery during its saluting of troops during a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, the second last act of the tattoo programme.

This was followed by all tattoo performers coming together to bid the audience farewell.

This year’s edition of the Cape Town Military Tattoo had no less than six pipe bands taking part.

They were the Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders, the Pipes and Drums of the Cape Field Artillery, and of the Cape Garrison Artillery.

From outside of Cape Town there were the Knysna and Districts Pipe Band, the Algoa Caledonian Pipe Band from Port Elizabeth and the Med Pipe Band from Durban.

Sea cadets from the SA Navy training ship Woltemade, Highlander dancers, silent drill teams and gun-runs were also a part of the proceedings.

The event is run by the SANDF and mainly performed by military bands from within its ranks.

The annual event took place over three nights ending Saturday.
