TWO men were stoned and set alight during a mob killing in Luyoloville, Gugulethu, yesterday.

Police confirmed the bodies of both unidentified men were found burnt when officers arrived at the scene.

The two were allegedly behind a spate of robberies along the bridge between Luyoloville and Heideveld, residents said.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said one of the men was from Tambo Village and the other from Gugulethu. He alleged that women on their way to the station had been targeted for their belongings.

At the scene, blood marks were still visible and bloodstained stones were scattered in a pathway leading to the bridge.

Police spokesman FC Van Wyk said no one has been arrested.

“Circumstances surrounding the murder of two unidentified males this morning at about 9am at Luyoloville, Gugulethu, near the train station, are under investigation. A murder case was opened for investigation,” Van Wyk said.

Heideveld resident Charles Hanson, who was at the scene, said one the two men was caught on the Heideveld side and brought to Luyoloville, where he was stoned before being set alight by angry residents.

“The attack happened at about 7am. The people of Luyoloville area are fed up with crime. There have been a number of robberies in this area. I understand they tried to rob a woman this morning and they were caught. They take people’s handbags and cellphones when they go to the train station in the morning,” he said.

Hanson said it was the first time suspected robbers had been caught and attacked in the area.
