LONDON: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby girl has just been named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Kensington Palace said yesterday.

She will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The palace said the name of the new princess includes Diana in honour of Prince William’s beloved mother.

Celebration events were held across Britain yesterday to mark the birth of the baby girl.

A total of 41 volleys were fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Hyde Park at 2pm yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Honourable Artillery Company also fired a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

The Royal Artillery Band also played music to celebrate the birth of the new princess.

The bells at Westminster Abbey also joined in the celebrations, pealing at 2pm.

Gun salutes have also taken place at Edinburgh, Cardiff and Hillsborough castles.

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess’s family visited the new princess on Sunday.

Prince Harry, who is currently in Australia, said his niece is “absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait to meet her”.

The baby girl weighed about 3.7kg and was born at 8.34am on Saturday at St Mary’s Hospital.

The princess is now the fourth in line to the British throne, behind her brother George, father William and grandfather Prince Charles. – Xinhua
