AMERICAN singer/ songwriter Brett Newski has just released his third album, American Folk Armageddon. Newski is on tour here.

The guitarist who lived in Saigon from 2011 to 2013 toured south- east Asia alone for six months until completing his first album on the road.

Coined the Homeless in Asia Tour, Newski completed 30 shows in unconventional venues including Couchsurfer Apartments, a Vietnamese convenience store, an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, an under-ground South Korean record shop and residential rooftops in Hong Kong.

Says Newski: “I write heaps of songs and tour my face off in an effort to keep my ADD under control. There are two people who refer to my style as “American folk armageddon,” which happens to be the name of my new record. Other people tell me I sound like the Violent Femmes, Frank Turner, Jake Bugg and Ben Kweller.”

Hear him at the Hermanus Gecko Bar on October 10, the Annex on October 11 and the Alma Café on October 17. – Arts writer
