CAPE Town’s diverse amateur theatre community converged at The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg this week for the annual Cape Amateur Theatre Award (CATA) announcements.

Out of 25 productions, it was the Gilbert & Sullivan Society that proved to be the overall winner, scooping five awards for Oklahoma.

Retiring panel chairman Dennis Benneyworth accepted the CODS Cup for Outstanding Achievement in Amateur Theatre from incoming chairwoman Lynn Moss.

For directorship, Teddy Davies took home the much-coveted Joseph Manca Cup for Best Director of a Musical, while Darryl Spijkers’s work on To Kill a Mocking Bird won him The Bertie Stern Cup as Best Director of a Play. Constantia Theatre Players and Hottentots Holland Dramatic Society each won four awards. But the Constantia Theatre Players’ production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof warranted the accolade of the Sol Rodsell Cup for Best Play.

The ever-popular Annie also justified The Hottentots Holland Dramatic Society earning the Marcia Lawton Cup for Best Musical.

Floris Baker of Milnerton Players won The Imps Shield for Best Newcomer in a Play in Don’t Dress For Dinner.
