ONE man drowned, one was reported missing and three were rescued by the NSRI after a boat capsized outside Gordon’s Bay harbour.

Yesterday, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the search would continue for the missing fisherman. He said an investigation was also being conducted into why the boat had capsized.

Lambinon said: “The body of the man was recovered and the three fishermen were taken aboard the sea rescue craft and brought to shore.

“Paramedics treated survivors for hypothermia (they did not require hospitalisation).

“The body of the fisherman was handed to the police and the Department of Health Forensic Pathology Services.”

Lambinon said the fishermen who survived confirmed that a fifth fisherman, wearing a life-jacket, had drifted away from the capsized boat in the strong winds.

Police spokesperson Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed that an inquest case had been opened for investigation.

“The investigation continues,” he said.

“Despite an extensive search, there has been no sign of the missing fisherman,” said Lambinon.

He said a private boat had spotted the capsized vessel.

”The family and colleagues of the drowned fisherman were informed and they are in the care of police trauma counsellors.”
