The Independent Police Investigative Directorate(IPID) has opened an inquest against members of the police flying squad following a shootout in Kuils River in which one man was killed, another wounded and four of their accomplices arrested.

The incident occurred at the corner of Nooiensfontein and Stellenbosch Arterial Roads in Kuils River yesterday. Police say three of the six suspects were in a hijacked Toyota Corolla and another three were travelling in a separate car. Acting on a tip-off that the six were on their way to rob at a local mall, police gave chase.

“The four arrested suspects, aged between 22 and 25 years, were detained on charges of possession of unlicensed, prohibited firearms, illegal ammunition and of a stolen vehicle,” said police spokesman FC Van Wyk.

The men were due to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court.
