PRETORIA: South African Post Office workers will embark on yet another strike from lunchtime today.

The Communication Workers Union has issued management of the post office with a 48-hour notice to commence with a strike.

The notice, which was also given to workers affiliated to the union, cited a certificate of non-resolution that was issued on January 20. “We intend to commence with our strike action on March 5 at 1pm.

“The issuing of the strike notice is in accordance with the Labour Relations Act, which requires 48-hour notice of the commencement of a strike given to the employer,” the union said in the notice.

The first phase of the programme of action, expected to last two weeks, is “work to rule”, ban on overtime and provincial rallies that will take the entire day of duty.

The strike follows another last year which lasted more than three months. It was suspected that the strike could cost the post office a record R1.3 billion loss for the year. The union suspended the strike in November when the post office management announced a government bailout.

The post office did not respond last night to enquiries about contingency plans during the strike.
