President Jacob Zuma commended fire-fighters in Cape Town yesterday for their “bravery and hard work” in trying to extinguish a raging fire which destroyed several homes along the South Peninsula.

“We praise the bravery and professionalism of all our firefighters who are attending to this raging fire to save lives and stop the damage to property and our prestigious natural environment, putting their own lives at risk in the process,” Zuma said.

“Given their determination, I am certain that all our Emergency Management Services personnel deployed to quell this fire will emerge safe and victorious.”

Hundreds of firefighters from the City of Cape Town and various volunteer groups have been battling since Sunday to contain the blaze.

The fire destroyed five houses, three bungalows and a luxury lodge.
