The City of Cape Town has advised of road closures on the M3 and M5 highways due to resurfacing.

Work on the two key highways started yesterday morning and is expected to last four weeks.

The City warned of an impact on traffic flows due to the roadworks and said work would be scheduled in such a way so as to limit the impact as far as possible.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, said: “The resurfacing work on the M5 has already started and is scheduled to be completed by Friday, 6 November, 2015, weather permitting.”

The affected stretches of the M5 freeway are as follows:

l On the southbound carriageway, from the Wetton Road Bridge to the first bridge joint.

l On the northbound carriageway, from the last bridge joint to the Wetton Road Bridge

l The Ottery on- and off-ramp will also be affected

“One lane of traffic will always be kept open to traffic, but it is anticipated that the closure of a lane could lead to congestion for traffic moving through the area of the roadworks. Importantly, work on the on-ramp and off-ramp will be done on Sundays only, and will require a full closure.”

On the M3, road resurfacing was currently taking place along the southbound carriageway of the freeway from the Kendal Road Bridge up to the unfinished bridge. This work is scheduled to be finished by October 29.

“The road resurfacing will require one lane to be closed at a time between 09:00 and 15:30 on weekdays. Motorists should please anticipate some traffic congestion in the area due to the closure of one traffic lane to allow for the roadworks,” Herron added. – ANA
