An edgy Soviet street-style fashion range has won third-year Durban University of Technology (DUT) fashion design student, Benazeer Mulla, the 2013 Emma Smith Art Scholarship award and prize money of R40 000.

Mulla, one of nine nominees for the scholarship award, tasted success last year when her Mind Control fashion range won her the Most Innovative Range award at DUT’s end-of-year fashion show.

Inspired by Soviet street style, her range featured backpacks designed using X-rays of the brain which she then incorporated with lighting.

“My choice of the brain stemmed from the fashion show’s theme i-aesthete, a representation of one’s individual concept of beauty, and how the way we receive and process information affects our aesthetic eye,” she explained.

Mulla is ecstatic about winning the scholarship, and after completing her B Tech she plans to do a Summer Study Abroad course in fashion communication in England.
