Glam up!

While most of us turn up at work looking like we stumbled out on the wrong side of the bed, there are few among us who wouldn’t mind looking like the well-turned out models we see on the catwalk.

Young designers, selected at the Durban Fashion Fair for the Next Generation Mentorship Programme in Milan, have a few suggestions of their own, after staging their very first fashion shows recently.

“The runway is all about head-to-toe glam,” says Philile Mbambo.

“So plan your look the night before, co-ordinating or contrasting to suit your tastes. Don’t leave shoes and accessories for the last minute – these are often the pieces that bring it all together.

“When it comes to execution, it’s all in the walk. Be sure to walk into a room with confidence. A tip – wear high heels – it will correct your posture and give you that strut,” Mbambo says.

She adds that a manicure and pedicure go a long way to looking polished.

Nontuthuko Langa says, “Know your body, know what looks good on you. Wear something comfortable. Make sure it fits perfectly.

“Your face is your fortune. So go to a professional to find the perfect make-up for your skin. Drink a lot of water for healthy, clean-looking skin.

“I exfoliate my skin with lemon. Cut it in half, sprinkle salt over and gently rub it all over your face. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes. Then wash your face. Do it three to five days a week,” she suggests.

When it comes to clothing, there are varying opinions.

As the slow fashion movement gains momentum, Blaire Hill says it’s important to dress with a conscience.

“Incorporate natural and neutral tones into a look that reflects your personal taste and style and be sure to opt for eco-friendly clothing in organic fabrics and devoid of harmful chemicals or dyes.”

Neliswa Jili says you have to be willing to be a bit “bold or edgy”– don’t be afraid to show your style.

Zamir Dada says you can achieve this by going for colour.

For Eli Ball’s range, it’s clear that accessories are the ultimate finisher this season – wear yours in layers.

Ball says with clothing, the trick is to build shapes and textures for a sophisticated look.

The other young designers who left for Milan this week are Kat Shoesmith, Khanyisile Malimela, Sadie Bosworth Smith and Thulisiwe Zakwe.
