One moment a Hollywood celebrity will be spotted with a limp ponytail, the next they’re tossing waist-length tresses on the red carpet. How do they do it?

Visit The Daily News Absolutely Fabulous Hall at the 2014 Pietermaritzburg Royal Show and all will be revealed.

“The hairpiece market is booming with everything from clip-in fringes to fake ponytails,” says Royal Show exhibitor, Alyda Mathee, owner of La Belle Chic, whose range of hair accessories, wigs and costume jewellery are sure to appeal to any glamorous girls-about-town.

“Today the art of buying hair doesn’t have to be daunting. Once you know about the quality, textures and cost, your shopping spree can begin.”

The latest trends in hair fashion artistry have come a long way from the days when the word hairpiece conjured up images of badly-fitting toupees.

“Modern clip-ins are designed to work with your natural hair, adding length and volume. Not as high maintenance as permanent extensions, which are bonded to your hair and can be costly, clip-in hairpieces offer a temporary change of style.”

Hairpieces come in a vast variety of colours and styles, from finest quality human hair to almost impossible-to-detect synthetic fibres.

Fashionistas wanting to have some fun with a different look without commitment can turn to clip-in extensions, braids, buns and ponytails as a great way to pull off a glamorous switch.

Hollywood A-listers Adele, Beyoncé, Jessica Simpson and Nicki Minaj are all proud to talk about investing in hair additions.

Adele announced on US TV that she named her wigs (“This is June… This is Jackie…”).

The Jessica Simpson- inspired hair extensions come in an array of gorgeous multi-tonal colours. Affordable, lightweight and easy to attach, these virtually undetectable extensions can be put in and taken out in a matter of minutes.

The Daily News Absolutely Fabulous Hall at the 2014 Pietermaritzburg Royal Show has rounded up the best get-gorgeous tricks in one spot.

Whether you want to learn how to create the perfect phony pony or brush up on your smoky eye technique, you will find tips galore to get pretty from head to toe.

TIPS FOR WEARING HAIR EXTENSIONS

Not sure about giving hair extensions a go, but really want to play around with a different length or pump up your hair’s volume? Here are a few simple tips and tricks on applying hair extensions like a pro.

Get to teasing

In order to keep the clip-in extensions in place, tease your real hair right at the root to roughen it up a bit.

That way the clips don’t slide out as the night goes on. Tease the hair above where you’re going to clip the extension in, horizontally, to give it some volume. This will keep the extension from showing, since your voluminous hair will help blend it in better.

Put your hair extensions in… upside down

If you are planning on wearing your hair up and want to add volume to your updo or ponytail, place the clip-in upside down against your roots (and underneath a layer of hair so you cannot see it). That way the hair extension is facing in the right direction.

To pull off the look, take the end of your teasing comb and section your hair into a top and bottom layer – clip the top section up. Then, at an angle (to avoid the hair extension from being seen), tease the spots near the root where the clips will go and place the hair extension in. Finally, continue pulling your hair up into the look you want.

Enlist the help of sponge rollers

If you are using synthetic hair extensions and your hair is curly or wavy, dampen the strands with water the night before you plan on wearing them and let them air dry.

As they are drying, take large sponge rollers, roll the hair up into them, and leave the curlers in overnight. Anytime you change the texture of hair, even if it’s synthetic, you have to wet the hair.

This step gives it more of a natural-looking texture and takes away some of the plastic/shiny texture to help it blend in better with your natural hair.
