Seasonal style

Beth Haynes, who has twice won the Caesarstone Kitchen Designer of the Year Award, and this year was a judge for the prominent competition, is the quintessential South African woman.

She wants to look trendy, but not at the expense of comfort and in line with her down-to-earth personality.

“Irrespective of the time of the year – in the South African scenario – versatility in one’s wardrobe is key,” McMaster said.

“Due to our climate, many of us keep one wardrobe that combines summer and winter items. Therefore it helps to buy items that are individually versatile and can be worn in more ways than one.

“Remember, too, that a look can go from day to evening by simply adding a jacket or changing slip-ons for heels.”

The advice she offered Haynes is useful for anyone shopping the latest transitional season sales.

“Key colours to look out for are tan, grey, charcoal, black, olive green (worn with black) and burgundy. Pantone, an organisation which is known to be the world’s authority on colour, have named marsala the colour of the year. This red-wine shade is sophisticated and has a grounded earthy feel.”

McMaster said taking your look from cooler to warmer weather was all about layering.

“In particular, this season is about the top layer – like an oversized coat or longer length jacket, a blanket jersey or poncho that is a statement piece. The top layer completes the look. Avoid layering over the coat or jacket unless it’s freezing.

“Masculine-looking shoes will complete the look and contrary to popular belief, can be worn with skirts and dresses too.

“Shiny and pointy shoes are in. Jeans in 2015 are ripped and edgy.

“The astute shopper will notice lots of ’70s-inspired fashion and trends, such as fringing, which is bound to be huge for summer 2015 – on jackets, tops, handbags, earrings, necklaces and shoes.

“Add suede to complete this look.”

McMaster said the latest neutral was tan. “It looks stunning when combined with grey, charcoal or black.

“Last, volume on volume is becoming increasingly popular. So look out for oversized coats, wear crop tops with pleated skirts and amp up the overall effect with tall, slim silhouettes.”
