For just R50, Durbanites can now contribute to mastectomy patients regaining their sense of “self” by making “Knitted Knockers”.

Sandra Thomas, owner of Satin Candy, a lingerie and bra boutique, now sells the Knitted Knockers kit at her Durban North and Kloof stores.

“I got on board this international project because not all ladies who have mastectomies can afford prosthetics.

“I had a lady come into my store with a pair of socks in her bra.”

Thomas is passionate about women finding the perfect fit and with traditional breast prosthetics being expensive, and often heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable, she decided to get on board and become a distributor of Knitted Knockers.

“The Knitted Knockers kit is best described as special handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.

Normal prosthetics “typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can’t be worn for weeks after surgery.

Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast.

“They can also be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing.”

Thomas said she and her team had volunteered to provide these free to women who had undergone mastectomies.

She said these were in huge demand and people interested in helping could buy a kit from the stores for R50, knit a pair and take them back to the store to be forwarded to those in need.
