As a commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, much of Matthew Willman’s work with the late statesman was bound by confidentiality.

Now he has published a book We Called Him Madiba, that will be launched, with a presentation, at Hillcrest High School next Tuesday at 6pm.

“I have this hunger to share through my stories and images of who he was and why he was so special,” says Willman.

“This book affords me the opportunity to tell the world a beautiful story about an exceptional man.”

The book features 126 images of Mandela, capturing the man often in a state of reflection, at other times interacting with dignitaries or sharing intimate moments with members of his family. Funds raised from the book will go to The Matthew Willman Foundation for the Visual Arts to keep paying forward Mandela’s dream.

“This book is my tribute to a great man; a book that will keep the memory of Nelson Mandela alive in the hearts of ordinary South Africans,” says Willman.

Tickets cost R20 – pay at the door. Please RSVP to Lynn White at 031 765 1215 for catering purposes.

The book costs R320 and will be available on the night.

Credit card facilities will be available.
