Review: Fresh Crochet

The title of this book had me wondering: How fresh can crochet be when it’s been around for a few centuries? But, yes, there are new ideas for those who are passionate about this craft.

The book is suitable for beginners because it explains the basics: different crochet hooks, types of yarn suitable for various projects, how to hold the yarn and hook and how to do the basic crochet stitches – all in pictures. It explains how to read patterns, the abbreviations used for stitches and how to achieve the right tension.

There are several crochet ideas and projects I liked and could put to good use such as the beach bag, floppy hat, gingham-style blanket, the headband which is so popular with toddlers nowadays, fingerless mittens for winter days, a big starflower doily that can double as a table mat, scatter cushion covers in various shapes and even the chunky babies’ booties.

There is a pattern for a coat hanger cover, a bookmark and even a pattern for a wine bottle carry bag which can be used as a gift bag when giving someone a bottle of wine.

However I draw the line at crocheted flowers in pots, crocheted jewellery such as a pendant to wear on a chain or a crocheted ring and bracelet.

What is useful is that each project is rated according to degree of difficulty, so one can tackle the easier projects before trying the more difficult ones. If you’re into all things crocheted you’ll enjoy this visually cheerful book.
