I Praise the Dance, produced by the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (Pansa), is a celebration of dance in a combination of magnificent photos and essays that tell a story of dance as it has evolved in South Africa.

Since democracy, South Africa has produced many skilled dancers and choreographers. Their stages have varied from the streets to community halls to state theatres.

Few books record or celebrate the diversity and beauty of dance in South Africa. But this one does just that. It provides insight into the artistic ways in which the human body can be used to contribute to the cultural landscape of our country.

Every photograph is brimming with vibrant energy and lighting that shows how movement shapes dancers’ identities and how identities find expression.

I Praise the Dance is a beautiful coffee table book that would have dance lovers, as well as readers who appreciate South Africa’s rich creative heritage, paging through it in awe. It is a book that will bring dance right into our homes and hearts.

I Praise the Dance invites readers to join in the dance, even if it’s only in spirit. It is available on the Pansa website: www.pansa.co.za – Meneesha Govender
