Durban - There was much swishing of silk and a riot of colour on the promenade on Sunday when hundreds of women of all ages took part in the sixth Durban Beach Sari Stroll.

The annual stroll was extended to include women who did not own a sari or, until now, had been too coy to try one. Some chose a free sari from a special selection in a tent, and were assisted in draping it.

Women walked from Suncoast Beach to the amphitheatre, to the beat of drums.

Kamlesh Gounden and Natalie Lange, who hatched the plan for the stroll and were avid sari collectors, said they were seeking to celebrate the beauty of the age-old garment that had remained largely unchanged in its appeal and grace over the centuries.

“We trust that you will be inspired and reminded that, just like the sari, you too are individual, elegant and versatile,” they said.

The event was organised in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality and Arya Samaj SA.

The event has grown in popularity with more than 600 women from diverse ethnicities and backgrounds taking part.

The elegance and beauty of the sari is celebrated while acknowledging the similarity of issues, fears and aspirations that are shared by women.
