Award-winning Maskandi musician, Mtshengiseni “Ndidane” Gcwensa, died on Monday at a Dundee hospital after a long illness.

Gcwensa, 39, was a member of the Maskandi group Amageza Amahle and a recording solo artist.

Arts and Culture spokesman, Lethukuthula Mtshali, said the musician was a family man known for his humour.

As a solo musician Gcwensa won nine South African Traditional Music Awards, among which he won Song of the Year, Best Selling Album and Composer of the Year. He was also lauded by the Amantshontsho KaMaskandi Awards.

Mtshali said a delegation from the department would visit the musician’s family this week.

Department head, Sibongile Nzimande, said it was a loss to the music industry.

“It’s always a tragedy when we lose one of our legendary artists who helped preserve and promote KZN’s diverse culture. Gcwensa’s passing is a huge loss to the music industry, his music was enjoyed by young and old,” she said.

The DA’s provincial leader, Zwakele Mncwango, sent his condolences to the bereaved family on Facebook.

“He was a valued member of the music industry and his loss will be felt by all he leaves behind. He was a dedicated musician who always put his fans first, performing even when he was not well.

The ANC’s provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala, said the musician had an amazing talent and said the industry had been struck a severe blow.

“We are deeply shocked by the death of Ndidane. He had an amazing talent and his music kept all of us entertained. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and his supporters,” he said.

He is survived by his wife and children.
