The massive hole that appeared on the N3 at Townhill on Thursday is not a sinkhole, as engineers originally thought, but is rather a 2 metredeep pothole that will be repaired by the Easter weekend.

This is according to South African National Road Agency Limited spokesman, Ravi Ronnie, who confirmed that lanes on the N3 would be open during the course of the week as site agents started filling the hole with asphalt.

Ronnie said a steel Armco pipe that caved in had caused the section of the road (pavement layers) to collapse, resulting in the large pothole.

Site agents on the scene confirmed the hole had already been filled with gravel and rocks and the repair process would begin on Monday morning.
