Durban - Durban’s Flying Squad was experiencing “certain challenges” regarding its vehicles, police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said on Tuesday, but those using them also needed to explain why they were out of action.

This was in response to an article in the Daily News on Tuesday, saying the Flying Squad did not have enough reliable vehicles at its disposal.

Zwane said police officers who drove carelessly and damaged police vehicles were dealt with according to the unit’s accident and damage reduction strategy, which required that these officers’ authority to drive state vehicles be provisionally withdrawn.

“When these members’ authority to drive state vehicles is withdrawn, they then complain,” he said.

The damage and repair of the unit’s vehicles was managed through protocols and processes that were in place, he said, and delays experienced while repairs were under way were beyond the control of management.
