KAMCILLA PILLAY

Vodacom Durban July hopefuls dazzled horse racing enthusiasts – and many just eager for a taste of South Africa’s most famous race – at Greyville Racecourse for the Gallops this morning.

Wrapped in coats, jerseys and scarves – except for a handful of models looking resplendent in skimpy designer gowns but covered in goosebumps – onlookers enjoyed the complimentary sticky buns and hot coffee as they cheered on their favourite horse just after sunrise.

The Gallops, held nine days before race day on July 4, is an opportunity for punters to assess the form of the July runners and can influence betting, in turn dictating the favourites on the big day. The Gallops today were timed and a commentary given of each performance with times broadcast on course.

After the Gallops, a discussion panel was to be held at the course featuring prominent racing personalities.

One of the conditions of entry in the Vodacom Durban July is participation in the event.

The horses come down the main straight alone or with a companion at full racing speed.

This year’s July theme, “The Captain’s Table”, has brought a nautical dimension to race day with the emphasis on the elegance of dining on a cruise.

“The July draws heavily on horse racing’s deeply-rooted tradition of elegance and chic fashion and this year will tap into the formal style expected from a dinner on a cruise liner,” the website said.

About 55 000 people are expected at the racecourse.

The July is one of 12 races taking place on the big day, with the action continuing into the evening under floodlights.
