Rapper Kanye West says he is serious about running for US president in 2020, but has noted in an interview that he has “a lot of growing up to do” before then.

When West, married to reality TV star Kim Kardashian, announced his intention last month, this was largely seen as |a joke. But asked by Vanity Fair magazine if he intended to go ahead, he said: “Oh, definitely.”

Grammy-winning West, 38, said that after the initial stunned reaction people were positive about the idea, despite his reputation for outbursts.

“It was like, ‘Wait a second, we would be into that, because… he’s extremely thoughtful. Every time he’s got in trouble, he was jumping in front of a bullet for someone else. He’s probably the most honest celebrity that we have.’

“I sit in clubs and I’m like, wow, I’ve got five years… I’ve got a lot of research to do, I’ve got a lot of growing up to do.”

West has not said which party he’d represent. His father has two Master’s degrees and his late professor mother a PhD. “There’ll be a point where I become my mother’s child.”
