London - Mickey Rooney’s final years were blighted by brutal physical and mental abuse at the hands of his wife, it has been claimed.

Numerous friends and relatives have accused Jan Rooney – the actor’s eighth wife – of years of physical abuse of the diminutive star.

Rooney died last year aged 93. At the time, he was being looked after by stepson Mark Aber after his lawyer had him removed from Mrs Rooney’s care, claiming she was abusing him.

Rooney had told a Senate committee on the abuse of the elderly that he had been a victim – without naming his abuser. The severity of that mistreatment has only now been revealed by the Hollywood Reporter.

Mrs Rooney’s accusers cite a photo of her late husband from January 2012 that shows him with a black eye and missing front tooth. Rooney told friends he had fallen but it is now claimed he was beaten up by his wife, who was twice his weight.

His widow, now 75, denies abusing him. She says he was “in and out of it mentally” and his testimony was unreliable.
