MUSIC legend Carlos Santana is to play in South Africa for the first time early next year.

Announcing the tour on his Facebook page, Santana said the group would play in South Africa in February.

Big Concerts managing director Justin van Wyk has confirmed that the superstar would be performing at the FNB Stadium in Joburg on March 1 and Grand Arena in Cape Town on February 25 and 26.

Santana, 66, posted on his wall that he would also perform on February 27, but Van Wyk said this had not yet been confirmed.

He added that the Cape Town Jazz Festival and other events had been trying to book Santana for years, without success.

Audiences will enjoy more than two hours of the Mexican-American jazz-rock king’s music, in what Van Wyk described as a “night with Santana”.

Santana said in a statement published by his agency, Creative Arts Agency, that “South Africa’s a very special place to me”.

He became a pioneer in the music industry in the late 1960s when he fused rock and Latin American music.

In 1998, Santana and his band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a museum that archives some of the most successful and influential artists in the rock music industry.

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday through Computicket and Big Concerts. Prices range from R510 to R850. - The Star
