London - Red wine could help tackle acne and other painful skin conditions, scientists claimed.

Resveratrol, the antioxidant derived from grapes, can kill bacteria that causes acne. And combining it with a common medication, benzoyl peroxide, appears to enhance and prolong the drug’s ability to kill the bacteria.

The findings could translate into new treatments for a condition that mostly affects teenagers, but can also carry on into adulthood.

Dr Emma Taylor, of the University of California, told the journal Dermatology and Therapy that laboratory tests showed benzoyl peroxide killed acne bacteria – but the effect did not last beyond the first 24 hours.

Resveratrol did not have a strong killing effect, but it inhibited bacterial growth for longer. Put together, the two compounds proved more effective.

Resveratrol is already recommended by doctors to ward off heart attacks. - Daily Mail
